FGM is found in communities practising a variety of different religions, including Christianity, Islam and Judaism (Jews).
Although FGM is not required by any mainstream religion, sometimes people mistakenly believe that it is their religious duty. Sometimes they are told this by their family, or a religious leader, who also incorrectly believe it is a religious requirement.
FGM and Christianity
Some Christian communities around the world practise FGM, although FGM predates Christianity by thousands of years. FGM is not mentioned anywhere in the Bible, and it goes against many of the Christian beliefs around protecting, respecting and not altering the body God built for you.
FGM and Islam
Some Muslim communities around the world practise FGM, although FGM is a cultural practice that predates Islam by thousands of years. FGM is not mentioned anywhere in the Quran, and it goes against many of the Muslim beliefs around protecting, respecting and not altering the body Allah designed for you.
