Ealing Council – Save Acton Community FGM Clinic!
Acton Female Genital Mutilation Community Clinic have just been told that their funding will be stopped in March 2017.
The clinic is a specialist FGM service that has been running for 10 years, it provides counselling, support and de-infibulation procedures (type 3 FGM reversal) for girls and women affected by FGM.
UK government – Ratify the Istanbul Convention!
It is estimated that 60,000 girls under the age of 15 are at risk of female genital mutilation (FGM) in the UK and that a further 137,000 girls and women are living with the consequences of it. If the UK government ratifies the Istanbul Convention they would be obligated to put in place a comprehensive national action plan on FGM for the UK, which FORWARD has been lobbying the UK Government for over the past few years. They would also be required to provide services such as counselling, legal aid, shelters and medical services. Under the Istanbul Convention, women and girls fleeing their countries because of FGM or forced marriage would be able to seek international protection under a better developed asylum system.
The current piecemeal policy approach to tackling FGM in the UK stifles progress in this area and leaves hundreds of women and girls vulnerable – they deserve a better system – therefore we strongly support the ICChange campaign and the call for the government to finally ratify the Istanbul Convention.
Support a Fair Deal for Women!
Research shows that government policies over the last 10 years have made the gap between men and women worse. FORWARD is one of 11 organisations supporting Fair Deal for Women’s 7 asks to the UK government as solutions to the problems women face in everything from health to media to legal rights.
European Union – Adopt a comprehensive approach to end FGM and protect women and girls fleeing their countries for fear of being mutilated!
The End FGM European Network is a European umbrella organisation set up by 11 national NGOs to ensure sustainable European action to end FGM. FORWARD’s Executive Director, Naana Otoo-Oyortey, is the President of the Network. It exists to create an enabling environment for coordinated and comprehensive action by European decision-makers to end FGM and other forms of violence against women and girls.
The END FGM European Network wants the European Union to adopt a comprehensive approach to end female genital mutilation and protect women and girls fleeing their countries for fear of being mutilated. They employ a five-point strategy, prepared together with member organisations on the ground, experts in the field of law, human rights and development, which calls on the EU to tackle FGM through these key areas of action: data collection; health; integrating FGM into broader measures on violence against women and girls; protecting asylum seekers and refugees affected by, or at risk of, FGM; and including FGM in the EU’s engagements with rest of the world.
