International News – Kenyan Family in Court Over FGM
Two teenage sisters from Kenya’s Rift Valley Province have won a court order preventing their father from forcing them to be genitally mutilated.
A court in the Rift Valley Province issued a permanent injunction on their father, Puis Kandie, stopping him form allowing his daughters Ednah, 17, and Beatrice Kandie, 15 to undergo the practice.
The historic case supported by the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Kenya, will hopefully “encourage other girls to stand against the practice” said the girls lawyer. The two sisters, from the Kalenjin tribe, said they consider the practice “outdated and repugnant to justice and morality in the 21st century”.
