FGM, FORWARD and UNISON

FORWARD attended the National Black Members Conference of UNISON last November. We held a well attended workshop with members wanting to know more about FGM and how they could help in our campaign to stop the practice both in the UK and worldwide.

We have recently received a donation of £2,000 from UNISON towards our campaign to stop FGM in the UK. We are most grateful to UNISON for their kind support for our work.

FORWARD conducted a Seminar at the UNISON National Women Conference held in Bournemouth from 12-14 February. The Conference unanimously passed a resolution to continue to support our campaign by funding a joint conference on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) with FORWARD at the end of 1998.

The purpose of the conference will be to raise awareness of the issue and to identify ways in which improved advice, support and medical services could be generated for individuals and communities experiencing this harmful practice.
