TuWezeshe Akina Dada, Swahili for ‘empowering our sisters’, is FORWARD’s feminist leadership programme focused on self-confidence and youth activism. Our programme is designed to inspire and equip young Black and minoritized women to champion actions on ending violence against women and girls (VAWG) and promoting equality and human rights.
This six-month fellowship equips fellows with practical feminist leadership skills, and training, networking and mentoring opportunities. TuWezeshe also provides fellows with sub-grants so they can undertake VAWG-focused social action projects, further enabling to enhance their activism and build sisterhood to lead social and political change.
Training structure and details
The programme will deliver five core training modules:
- Understanding myself, my agency and my power;
- Unpacking patriarchy and feminism;
- Understanding human rights and VAWG;
- Principles of transformative feminist leadership and;
- Social change activism
The leadership training will take place in person and online. In-person residential training will be held in London from Friday 1st September to Sunday, 3rd September 2023. Subsequent virtual trainings will take place on the three following weekends.
Who can apply?
The young women’s leadership programme is designed for Black and Minoritized young women living in the UK:
- aged 18-30 years who are committed to leading social change
- passionate about undertaking social action projects to tackle VAWG
- who can commit six (6) months to the fellowship and attend residential training from 1st – 3rd September 2023 in London!

This is a non-fee paying programme, however, participants are required to pay for their transport costs to get to the residential training in London. Limited bursaries are available for transport costs for those out of London.
About the organisers and funders
The TuWezeshe initiative is led by FORWARD, an African women-led organisation tackling multiple forms of VAWG, including FGM, child marriage and sexual and domestic violence. This training is supported by Dr Martens Foundation and Schwab Charitable Fund.
