FORWARD is a partner in the Men Speak Out project, co-funded by the European Union and coordinated by GAMS Belgium. The project is a partnership project with organisations from the UK, Netherlands and Belgium. One major goal of the Men Speak Out project is to carry out research with men from communities which practice female genital mutilation (FGM) to learn about what they know and think about the practice. In the UK, the research will focus on Sudanese and Sierra Leonean communities. We are now seeking to recruit men to carry out interviews to collect survey data for this exciting project.

Profile of the Data Collector

We are seeking to recruit 20 men from the Sudanese or Sierra Leonean diaspora living in London or Bristol who are over 18 and have links to their respective communities. They must meet the following criteria:

  • Fair knowledge of English and strong communication skills
  • Ability to read and write in their own language
  • Honesty and integrity in collecting and handling the research data
  • Respectful of other people’s cultures and ways of life
  • Available for the duration of the study from 1st May to 5th June
  • Willing to visit various sites in their city to carry out interviews with randomly selected men from the community (not solely people you already know)

Duties of the Data Collector

  • Participate in a training session on administering the survey and data collection, to take place in London on the 30th April 2016 from 10am to 3pm
  • Strictly follow instructions that will be given by FORWARD on how to conduct the interview
  • Immediately communicate any problems and issues that may arise during field work to a designated FORWARD staff
  • Select interview respondents based on FORWARD’s guidelines and make all possible efforts to collect the data from a diverse range of social circles and environments
  • Work as a part of a team and share good practice as well as challenges with others
  • Return all survey questionnaires, including those that may be invalid/void

Remuneration of the Data Collector

Transport allowance for attendance at the training session and for reasonable inner city travel costs for carrying out interviews will be covered upon production of a valid receipt.

In addition to this the Data Collector will be paid £5 for all valid questionnaires completed.

Each successful Data Collector will also receive a certificate as acknowledgement of their data collection and research skills. Reference letters can also be written upon request.
